the role of mastic in skin protection
The skin’s smooth function depends on the presence of trace elements, such as zinc, iron, copper etc (Shapiro and Saliou, 2001). Zinc acts as an antioxidant and triggers the activation of numerous enzymes. Zinc deficiency leads, amongst all else, to skin irritation, dermatitis, delayed wound healing, acne and alopecia. These conditions can be reversed by zinc supplements (Yamaoka et al. 2000).
Zinc offers skin antioxidant protection against UV-radiation exposure (Record et al. 1993) and contributes to the regulation of vitamin A levels in the human body. In this way, it keeps skin cells lively and healthy and aids in their regeneration after injuries and burns. Its role in collagen creation means that it accelerates the healing of wounds. At the same time, it contributes to the smooth excreting function of skin oil glands and thus helps to regulate sebum production, deal with acne problems and limit hair loss.
In addition to zinc, other trace elements, such as iron and copper, offer protection against wrinkles and skin edema caused by UV radiation, while decelerating photo-carcinogenesis (Bissett and McBride 1996). Increased concentrations of the above trace elements have been identified in the Mastic of Chios, while their immediate bioavailability in the human body has also been scientifically proven (Sawidis et al. 2007). At the same time, mastic oil, mastic’s main ingredient, has an excellent skin regenerating action and is a superior moisturizer; in combination with its antibacterial action, it creates a protective film, allowing skin to radiate.
